The municipality of Tías is located on a gentle slope and its staggered houses stand out on it. This territory, 12 kilometers from Arrecife, it's just over 64 square kilometers. Tias has very picturesque towns that attract those who want to know the traditional and modern side of the island. The almost 21 thousand inhabitants of Tias are divided between the towns of: Tías, Puerto del Carmen, Mácher, La Asomada, Conil and Masdache.
The town of Tías is one of the most traditional in terms of its architecture and history. The typical houses with white walls and green frames characterize Lanzarote's culture. Tías has the curious sculpture of almost five meters made to pay homage to the Portuguese writer José Saramago, who settled in this town in 1993 to write some of his works as "Blindness". Saramago spent the last few years of his life in Lanzarote, but died in Lisbon (2010). It is a pooint of interest for the fans of the author or literature in general. If you are in this village you can not miss it.
Puerto del Carmen, on the other hand, is more touristy. The most inhabited nucleus of the municipality is counted as one of the most valued sun and beach destinations in the Canary Islands. It is almost always clear, which is a plus for beach lovers. The most famous beach is Playa Blanca, which the locals call "Playa Grande" (Big Beach) for its kilometer and two hundred meters in length and because it should not to be confused with the southern town with the same name. There's a lot of tourist demand in Puerto del Carmen and that's why it has a very important commercial area.
The arrival to Puerto del Carmen can be enjoyed by walking along the seaside promenade from the capital Lanzarote Arrecife, which has a distance of approximately 10 kilometers and is normal to see tourists and residents walking, jogging or riding a bike by the sea.
It is also known traditionally as La Tiñosa, thanks to the old seafaring village that maintains and lets see traces of the past. Puerto del Carmen has 8 km of coast which hosts a large number of hotels and apartments. The gastronomic and accommodation offer is not lacking in variety.
