The “Jardin de Cactus” or Cactus Garden is another work of César Manrique in which integrates his architectural vision with the landscape.
Art and nature are combined in the Cactus Garden thanks to the audacity of the project of Manrique. It is located in the town of Guatiza, municipality of Teguise, in the middle of an agricultural environment. The selection of this site for “El jardín de Cactus” answers to the landscape aesthetics.
It takes you by surprise after crossing the gates of an entry that blocks the marvels inside. With a circular structure the attention is focused on this kind of representative amphitheater of the island craters, with its special walls formed by descending terraces on the ground, like steps, in which the different varieties of cactus are exhibit. A staircase begins the way through the curving cobbled paths and stairs that lead to the different areas of the garden. There are over seven thousand two hundred foliage of more than one hundred different species, originating from places as diverse as Peru, Mexico, Chile, United States, Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar, Morocco and the Canary Islands. Note that the Botanical Cactus Garden collection continues to grow with periodic plantings of new species.
On the outside the large metal cactus stands out and also the wrought iron gate as emblematic elements of the “Jardin de Cactus”. Inside, it is necessary to see the characteristic domed ceiling of the shop and the cafe located inside the center.
This “Cactarium”, was the last work César Manrique did in Lanzarote in 1991.
