Bodegas El Grifo are located in the San Bartolome area, on the LZ-30 road.
El Grifo is the oldest winery in the Canaries and is among the ten oldest in all of Spain and it’s visited by more 60,000 people every years. Its experience has reflected in the multitude of awards it has earned over the years, also becoming one of the most prestigious wineries in the Canary Islands.
The Grifo is a family-run business first created in 1775, the family vineyard expands 61.5 hectares and they produce over 400,000 bottles each year.
They make and bottle the wine in the same property, with a capacity of over 1 million liters total. Having more than 500 liters barrels of French and American oak, both for red wines and for old sweet wines.
All harvesting labor in the vineyard is done manually, which might be one of the most curious facts of how wine is produced in Lanzarote, a result of its volcanic landscape.
The old facilities of the winery currently host the Museum of Wine, built on the volcanic lava of the XVIII century. I can be accessed by entering the “Monumento al Pájaro Grifo” a work by César Manrique. The old machinery from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries are on site, which makes it a must-visit spot for wine lovers and history-geeks.
For wine lovers can also call and book wine-tasting courses year-round.
